Catrin Win Morgan (violin), from Llangadog in Carmarthenshire, was born in 1981. At the age of eleven she was awarded a scholarship to study at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where she studied the violin with Wen Zhou Li, and the harp with Jean Bell. In her final year she led the school’s Symphony Orchestra and was awarded the Ida Carroll String Prize, and the Orchestra Prize. Catrin went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, continuing her studies with Wen Zhou Li, and most recently Yair Kless. While at college she led the Symphony Orchestra and the New Ensemble, graduating last summer with a First Class Honours degree. Following an article about her in the BBC Music Magazine, Catrin was the subject of a BBC TV Wales documentary, Catrin and her Music. She won first prizes in the Urdd and National Eisteddfods and as a result of winning the Dyfed Young Musician competition 2000, she gave a concerto performance in the Carmarthenshire Millennium Festival in association with BBC Music Live. This led to recitals at the Carmarthen Festival, St. David’s Cathedral Festival, and the Wexford Festival in Ireland. Since then, Catrin has given recitals in Germany, Italy, Canada, the USA and the United Arab Emirates. Last summer she was awarded scholarships to study at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine, USA, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg Austria. Over the last year Catrin has performed with Jennie on P&O and SAGA cruise liners travelling to Africa, South America, Norway and around the Mediterranean. Catrin greatly enjoys chamber music, and for many years led the National Youth String Academy (NYSA), touring with them to Washington DC, giving critically acclaimed concerts in venues including the Capitol and the Kennedy Centre. During the summer, Catrin performed Malcolm Arnold’s Double Violin Concerto with NYSA, performing in London and the Aberystwyth Music Fest. Catrin is second violinist in the Galitzin String Quartet who recently returned from Holland having won third prize in the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition. Having received funding from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Tillett Trust and the Ryan Davies Memorial Fund, Catrin is currently studying with Professor Maurice Hasson at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she is recipient of the Sir Elton John Scholarship. |
