The Welsh Crwth (pronounced crooth) is a form of bowed lyre, known in England as the crowde or crouther, in medieval Latin as the chorus and on the Continent as the bowed rotte.
It is played on the shoulder or between the knees. There are 6 strings which are doubled in octaves. The two bass strings are off the fingerboard, and can be used as drones, or plucked with the left thumb.
